The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, is the primary Federal agency for coordinating and supporting medical research. Composed of 27 Institutes and Centers, the NIH provides leadership and financial support to researchers in every state and throughout the world. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) is one of these 27 NIH Institutes and leads a national program of research on the biomedical, social, and behavioral aspects of the aging process; the prevention of age-related diseases and disabilities; and the promotion of a better quality of life for all older Americans.

The American Foundation for Aging Research (AFAR) promotes the health and welfare of the mature individual by encouraging and promoting scientific research on the biological aspects of aging and by providing educational opportunities in this field. Association for Geriatric Psychiatry to raise awareness of psychiatric and
